Grant Benton is in a bad way. He lost the family home. He became a merchant by trade. He thought he would have the money to buy back the family land. And he did. Except he didn’t realize improvements had been made. So where he had the money, now he did not for the price had doubled. So he decided to marry the daughter since that was to be her dowry. Except his annoying conscience demanded he get to know Mr. Irene Knopp better. Much better.

Nether realized that Lady Irene was a target. Both believed Lord Crowle’s brother was behind the attacks. Until it became clear the attack came during the only scheduled appointments on Lady Irene’s itinerary. As the pieces fell into place and families reunited , Lord Crowle realizes he cannot live without Lady Irene. But Lady Irene thinks otherwise.

It’s a slow start but rapidly makes progress to an exciting ending.
